The Ambassador of Education, Statesmanship and Social Service : S. Balbir Singh

S. Balbir Singh was an eminent educationist, an experienced administrator, a seasoned statesman and a kind hearted human being. As the President of the Governing Council of Lyallpur Khalsa College, he dedicated 35 years of his life to the cause of higher education. Under his leadership the college created a glorious history and emerged as the premier institution of Northern India . As a visionary educationist S. Balbir Singh played a leading role in bringing higher education at par with the times. He was the first person in the field of education to think of starting computer and technical education at college level. He not only started educational Institutions but also established such standards in the field of education which led to all round development of students. For this, he made it sure that the students participate in sports and cultural activities along with academics. Being a person with versatile abilities S. Balbir Singh steered the fields of education and politics to the direction of development and contributed his maximum to the both. He served as the health and family welfare minister in the government of Punjab from 1972 to 1977, as member of Rajya Sabha from 1992 to 1998 and as a member of the Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2004. He served as the patron of NRI Sabha Punjab from 2005 to 2008. Apart of this he also acted as the Chairman of Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India from 1994 to 2008. As a Minister in the state government and as a Member Parliament he performed all his duties efficiently, effectively and with dedication and commitment. In the capacity of chairperson of the federation of college managements, he from time to time conveyed the problems of the colleges to the government He dedicated his entire life to society and education and also to the encouragement of the social and moral values. Sardar Balbir Singh was an intelligent administrator who worked with dedication and diligence for the spread of education in the society. Realising the need of education in the region, he started new Institutions under the Lyallpur Khalsa group and provided the society education in traditional as well as modern fields like law, technology and management. In continuation with the tradition, Lyallpur Khalsa College is being opened at Kapurthala also under the able guidance of Sardarni Balbir Kaur. December 5 is the birthday of Sardar Balbir Singh and is celebrated as the Annual Alumni Meet of the college. Sardar Balbir Singh himself was an alumnus of the Institution. So the college feels proud to celebrate his birthday as the day of the annual alumni meet. On this day those students of the college who have made the institution proud, get together to celebrate the birthday of Sardar Balbir Singh . This year also on December 5 the annual alumni meet is being organised. All the former students of Institution are welcome in this meet.
