One of the distinguished departments of the Lyallpur Khalsa College, Post Graduate Department of History was established in 1948. The Post Graduation of History course was started in 1966. The built-up area of the department is 2070 Sq. ft. The departmental office has a computer facility and internet and intercom connectivity. At present, the Department faculty is engaged with more than 600 students including students from undergraduate classes. Apart from offering a Masters in History, the department also offers History as one of the elective subjects in BA. In its glorious past, the department produced two Heads– Dr. Prithipal Singh and Dr. Satish Kapoor – for the institution who served distinctively as Principal. Sanjiv Chopra, IAS, Varinder Singh and Ajitpal Singh (Hockey Olympians), Sarabjit Cheema (Punjabi Singer), Preet Mohinder Tiwari (Punjabi Film Lyricist), Joginder Singh Mann (Member of Punjab Legislative Assembly), Sushil Kohli (participant in Asian Games in swimming, now General Secretary of District Swimming Association of Jalandhar) and Ajitpal Singh (Boxing) are some of the notable students who brought laurels to the department and the college.

The Annual result of Post Graduate students has always been exemplary as many students have secured high positions in the university examinations. Apart from running successful businesses enterprises, alumni of the department are working in banking, teaching, railways, police and other government as well as private sectors. The Department provides Sahota Scholarship worth Rs. 5000 in the memory of Late Prof. Harjinder Kaur Sahota to Post Graduation level meritorious students each year. Apart from academics, the department organizes excursions, fresher and farewell parties and other functions of historical importance to provide students with a platform to showcase their curricular as well as extracurricular talents. The faculty members undertake constant endeavors for the all round development of the students.The Department runs a Centre for Historical Studies under its aegis under the directorship of Dr. Suman Chopra, Head, PG Department of History. The Research Centre keeps its date with history and frequently organizes seminars, conferences, and symposiums on important occasions in addition to the valuable research work carried out throughout the year.To guide students in various competitive examinations i.e. Civil Services, UGC/NET, Staff Selection Commission etc. department runs separate Competitive Coaching Classes (CCC) under the umbrella of College Competitive Cell. The Department also has a rich library containing a plethora of various historical literature and scriptures. The department has a rich book-bank to lend books to the deserving as well as needy students. At present, Dr. Suman Chopra is the Head of the Department Dr. Amandeep Kaur and Dr. Karanbir Singh, Sandeep Kaur and Suraj Bhagat are working as Assistant Professors.
