The Post-Graduate Department of Economics is committed to excellence in teaching at both the graduate and post-graduate levels. Since its inception in 1948, it has established an unrivalled reputation as the degree program for young people seeking careers not only in Academic Research but also in Banking, Stock Exchange, Data Analysis, Insurance and Special Government Services like Indian Economic Services, Indian Statistical Services. The job providers in these sectors always prefer employees having intrinsic and extrinsic knowledge of Economics.

The courses (M.A. Economics and B.Sc. Economics) seek to cultivate the analytical and critical skills relevant to industrial and market demands. It tenders rigorous quantitative training required to imbibe the ability to analyze and critically interpret a variety of emerging economic issues. It aims to provide the research tools and approaches needed for those who wish to proceed Doctoral studies.

Our department has a highly qualified faculty with expertise in teaching skills and vast research experience. Beyond regular studies, teachers also endeavor to equip their students with appropriate personality development skills, preparation for interview and competitive examinations related to the stream of Economics. Students who tend to settle abroad also have an edge with the knowledge of modern concepts of Economics, Computer Applications and Statistical tools. These constituents are a part and parcel of both the courses i.e. M.A. Economics and B.Sc. Economics. Seminars, Guest Lectures, Workshops and Case Studies are conducted on latest economic issues as per the requirement of the students. Handwritten notes are also provided to assist the weak students to keep up with the rest of the class. Financial assistance and books are provided to students from economically weak background.

OBJECTIVES

The programs offered by the Department of Economics are designed to

  • provide a general understanding of the functioning of the economic system and the role of institutions, groups, and regions within that system.
  • prepare the students for employment in industry as professionals and  in government services.
  • pursue graduate work in line with advanced degrees of M.A. (Economics), M.Sc. Statistics, M.B.A. and Ph.D.

Infrastructure      

  • The department is equipped with intercom facility, internet facility as well as printing facility for the faculty and students.
  • The department also house separate Seminar Hall with projector and speakers.
  • Moreover the department has an Air Conditioned Economics Lab appropriate for research activities. It has a comfortable sitting arrangement, and departmental library.
  • Regular notice board is maintained to update students on current economic issues and employment opportunities in the Economics stream.

Students Assistance

  • Fee concession is being provided to the merit holders and economically weak students.
  • Free books are provided to the needy students.
  • Handwritten notes are also provided to assist the weak students to keep up with the rest of the class.
  • Education Tours, Industrial visits, Budget Discussion and Guest Lectures are organized on regular basis for professional exposure of students.
  • Inter-departmental competitions like Poster Making, Collage Making, Paper reading and Quiz are also organized.
  • The students have opportunity to pursue their interest in N.C.C., N.S.S. Extra Curricular Activities and Sports also.

Departmental Library

  • The department library consists of more than 300 books related to Economics, Statistics, Econometrics and Quantitative Techniques.
  • Books are issued to students and teachers.
  • Reports, Dictionaries and Statistical Data are also available to be used for reference purposes.
  • Regular newspapers and magazines are subscribed in the department.

  • Honors degree in B.A/B.Sc. (Economics) affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Post Graduate Courses

  • Two Years Masters in Economics, divided into four semesters, affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Other Courses

  • Bridge courses are conducted for B. Sc. I in the subject of Quantitative Techniques for the students who have not studied Mathematics in lower classes.
  • Remedial classes are conducted after the first terminals in every semester for weak students.
